Sparesbox Mechanic App
Designing the companion app for mobile mechanics
Overview
Sparesbox was a start-up entering into the mobile car servicing space. Their unique proposition, was to utilise current technologies to make servicing your vehicle quicker and easier than ever before. With this, the intention was to make the car servicing process paper free. In turn they required a simple app for their mechanics to use while servicing a customer's vehicle.
As Lead Web Designer, I worked closely with our in-house development team during the entire design process.
Insights
During the build and testing phase of the project, we quickly learned that we needed to design specifically for smaller phone devices. With a requirement to document the entire process of the service, the mechanics had to take photos as they worked. Using a bigger iPhone model, the mechanics were unable to get the device within the nook of a car engine to take those detailed photos properly. So we essentially downgraded the designs to work with those smaller devices.
App features
The app lists each job the mechanics have scheduled that week. Within each schedule are the customer details, which allow for complete documentation of an individual car service. This includes a comprehensive breakdown of the individual parts inspected, with clearly written notes and the ability to attach photos. The notes for each part are selected through a pre-written template status, or for the mechanic to add in their own notes directly.
The customer can pay directly through the app. Once the transaction is complete, a “digital logbook“ is then emailed to the customer, informing them of what was worked on during their car service.
